Trav-el along the A92 through the countryside of central Fife to Falkland. Falkland Palace dominates this old village, and was one of the main residences of the old Royal family of Scotland, the Stewarts (Stu-arts). Aside from the palace, the village is simply one of the most beautiful in Scotland with an ar-ray of old cottages and narrow winding streets. After head towards Dundee and continue along the coast towards Stonehaven to the well-preserved ruins of Dunnottar Castle, perched on a dramatic cliff some 160 ft above the North Sea. Heading north from Stonehaven on the A957 to Crathes Castle, a fairytale castle stood in a stunning estate. Overnight in Aberdeenshire.

Day 3 - 76 miles

Today you start the Scottish Castles Trail by travelling north of Aberdeen to Castle Fraser, one of the grandest castles of Mar. Dating back to the 15th century; this baronial castle has some very quirky features for you to discover including secret staircases and hidden trapdoors. It also boasts spectacular panoramic views from the top of the round. Later you travel through the Grampian countryside where you can choose to visit either the impressive ruins of Tolquhon Castle; once described as one of the most beau-tiful castles in Scotland. This is a great building to explore and if you are lucky, you might even find the secret compartment in the laird’s quarters where he hid his valuables. Alternatively you can visit Haddo House, an elegant mansion house and home to the story-rich Gordon family, who lived here for more than 400 years. No visit is complete without a visit to its charming terrace gardens. Overnight in Aberdeenshire.

Day 4 - 69 miles

Depart Royal Deeside and head to your first stop of the day, Fyvie Castle. A magnificent fortress with a 800-year history rich in legends, folklore and even ghost stories. It is also home to one of the largest private collections of Raeburn’s in the world so if you are an art lover, this is the castle for you. Heading north on the A947 you reach Delgatie Castle at Delgaty, the home of the late Captain and Mrs Hay of Delgatie. Set in an exten-sive estate, there are many walks and gardens for all to enjoy. Bringing your third day to a close is a visit to Kinnaird Head Castle, now the home to the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses. Take a tour to discover the fascinating transformation from castle, to lighthouse, to museum. Overnight in the Fraserburgh/Banff area.

Day 5 - 144 miles

Today you will visit Craigievar Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic and best-loved castles, and is said to be the inspiration for Disney’s Cinderella Castle. Decorated with turrets and gargoyles, this spellbindingly Castle is sure to charm children and adults alike. Some 30 minutes north west of Alford is Kildrummy Castle, the imposing 13th century stronghold of the Earls of Mar. Situated in the landscape around Strathdon and, although ruined, it has retained many of its features including its hall and chapel. One of the highlights is witnessing the daylight shine onto the high altar through the chapel’s three elegant lancet windows. Travelling through the heart of Royal Deeside, your final stop for the day is the charming town of Braemar and its castle. Best known for its unusual star-shaped outer wall, the 17th century stronghold is furnished with many interesting ornaments. Alternatively you can visit Balmoral Castle*, a firm favourite with the Royal Family.
