The Gobbins, Up Close and Personal with the Irish Sea
If you love nature, love to stay physically fit, want to see some wild animals and want to taste sea salt in the air then look no further! The Gobbins are popularly boasted as “the most dramatic walk in Europe.” The Gobbins consists of a 3-mile tunnel below sea level resting right above the Irish Sea. This stunning walk will bring you up close and personal with the best nature Ireland has to offer.
History
Believe it or not, The Gobbins were originally created in 1902! The structure was built by Irish railway Engineer, Berkley Dean Wise. The cliffs you will view were created by lava eruptions in basalt rock. In some of these caves, sea smugglers even once resided!
After years of wear and tear, however, The Gobbins halted business in the 1960s. In 2015, a 7.5-million-pound budget allowed The Gobbins to reopen and become the gorgeous structure it is today!
Fun Fact: Gobbins means “tip of land,” originating from the Gaelic word Goban.
Wildlife
Because you are so close to the water, you’ll be in for a treat! Dolphins and seals should be visible in the waves below. Many birds are also native to the area including: puffins, shags, kittiwakes, razorbills, guillemots, cormorants, fulmars and more.
Take me there!
The Gobbins are open March through December, and the best time to visit is from April to September, when the weather is warmest. Opening hours are daily from 8:30am until 5:00pm. If you’re traveling from Dublin, you will want to travel about three hours north to get there. Belfast is a suggested place to stay when visiting The Gobbins since it’s a short 30-minute drive away. Tours run two and a half hours and are always guided with protective gear provided. A café, picnic area and children’s playground are also available for your enjoyment on property.
If you’re ready for Europe vacations which include physical activity, stunning scenery, and unforgettable wildlife, then The Gobbins could be a great part of your trip. At Celtic Tours we can happily add The Gobbins to your next tour!
