Five Irish Castles

FIVE IRISH CASTLES

Ireland is home to so many amazing castles. It’s difficult to see them all, or even list them, but we’ve
collected a handful to share with you today. These popular castles make a great stop on any itinerary and are sure to impress.

Ballynahinch

First on the list is Ballynahinch. Built in 1546, this Connemara castle has a rich history and interesting former owners, such as the Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley (Grainneuaile), who died in 1603 after maintaining lordship by land and sea of her father’s estate. The castle became a hotel in the early 1900s, and boasts luxury rooms with classic elevated décor. This riverside estate is surrounded by forest, with idyllic views and a gorgeous walled garden as well.

Bunratty

Bunratty Castle was built in 1425 in county Clare by the Macnamara Clan. Home to a collection of medieval and renaissance artwork, furniture and artifacts, this castle is the perfect place for history lovers. History comes alive in the form of their nightly Medieval Banquet Show as well: Enjoy a 4-course meal with music, song & dance in the castle’s great hall with aptly dressed performers and an environment fit for a king.

Clontarf

Clontarf Castle is the oldest castle on our list. Built in 1172, this incredible castle is a favorite for many, and many famous figures have resided as guests there for weeks or months, including the composer George Handel, and the author of Dracula, Bram Stoker. Today, Clontarf Castle is a hotel which expertly combines historical and contemporary decorations, fine dining options and a wonderful art gallery. It serves as a great wedding venue too!

Kilronan

Next on the list is Kilronan. This 18th century castle is an icon of Roscommon, near Lough Meelagh and surrounded by greenery, including several serene walking trails. Today Kilronan is home to a luxury estate and spa. But not too long ago, this castle was little more than a ruin; the entire interior was gutted, and even the roof was removed at one point due to financial hardship. In 2006 it was restored and transformed into the wonderful estate we have now.

Glenveagh

Glenveagh Castle is a staple of any irish itinerary. Located in Glenveagh National Park, this iconic estate was built in 1870 and continues to captivate visitors daily. Glenveagh National Park is the second-largest National Park in Ireland, and full of incredible views and trails to explore. The castle estate itself has plenty to explore too: a gothic orangery, Italian terrace, beautiful tea rooms, gardens and more.

This is just a small selection of beautiful castles in Ireland which you can visit. Which one piques your interest the most? Let us know your opinion on social media! Follow us on Instagram or Facebook for updates and discussions.
